I had the same problem - io.netty... and it looks like the problem was with ports. I´m playing on the server, where MC didn´t run on the default port 25565 but 35565. I asked the admin to change it to the default settings(25565) and I´m able to connect to the game (but only through direct connect). Maybe will be this solution useful for others.
