This is the generic error message when trying to connect to a server that isn't available from your end, or it's actually no server at all (example: try connecting to the IP "google.com" - this error will show). If it is a valid server, something is blocking the connection to the server, which is a technical support issue. Please use the technical support resources for help, which you can find here: https://minecrafthopper.net/help/technical-support-resources/
I can't connect to any Minecraft server. What I've tried:
Reinstalling Minecraft (numerous times). Both by deleting the Minecraft folder from roaming, saving the saves to another location so it's a clean install.
Restarting my computer.
I've pinged the server from CMD and I have connections to the internet, so I'm sure it is in Minecraft.
I'd like to add that this happens when I try to connect to any server. I've taken the 2 most popular servers on the internet and they give me the same message. Plus this one server I want to join.

This invalid report also describes the same issue: MCL-7711

Could be caused by firewall or anti-virus software blocking Minecraft. See here for a list of known incompatible software.

same problem, and this says resolved but there's no response. can the creator of the bug report say how they solved it?

It's not resolved. I'm sure people are still having this issue, and it's not just from firewalls and antivirus programs.
I had this issue, and I didn't even have a firewall. I turn all that crap off as soon as I install my computer, so there's no way for the firewall to be the problem.
I don't have this problem anymore, so I can't help you to do the bugfix, but @Catsettos seems to have the same issue.
Unresolve this report, it's not resolved.

This is happening to me as well. It is so frustrating, so, if anyone has a solution please leave it here for us to see. ;(

Caleb (and catsettos):
If you have turned off your firewalls and antivirus software and it still doesn't work, then I don't have a solution for you. Mojang doesn't seem to care all that much either, so I'm sorry for you both.

Same problem here! I have been running my Modded server for well over a year now and nobody had issues getting in and all of a sudden out of the blue nobody not even I can join and this message pops on everyone's including my screen when they or I try to join my server so I dunno if something failed to update or if something changed and it's buggy who knows! Seems like it could be a forge issue? I would have no clue where to even start to figure out what out of the blue went wrong so I now am sitting in everyones boat here too now! I wish it would not say no further information like it needs to give some hint so people can at least figure out what's the potential cause of this! 🙂

Just checked out a forum on Github and it seems to be a Netty issue but I would have no clue how to run tests on Netty and start narrowing down the issue!
@unknown, please note that we don't accept reports here for modded clients, servers or launchers. Can you check whether this problem still occurs when using a vanilla client, server and launcher?

This has been happening to me for a few months now. Using vanilla minecraft and I can't connect to any servers. Been playing minecraft for years with no problems and now I can't, very disappointing that nothing has been done to fix this bug.

Hey thomas, could you solve the problem, because im still having it.
Im trying to enter Hypixel in MC 1.12, vanilla, no mods and im still having this error.
Thanks! 🙂

Hey I've tried just about everything thing I could think of. Disabled all of my firewalls, made sure the correct ports were open on my router, reset my router, reinstalled minecraft, even tried to join a server on a different computer but I got the same error. I'm thinking minecraft is having an issue with certain types of routers or something along those lines. It's strange because I have been playing minecraft since around beta 1.3, which goes back probably 6 or 7 years ago and this is the first time I haven't been able to connect to any servers. Just a few months ago I was hosting my own server through a third party website and had no problems connecting to it and neither did anyone else. Also I haven't changed ISPs or routers since then so it has to be some sort of bug within minecraft itself.

IVE FOUND A CURE!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't blame your computer about the error blame your WiFi because i factory reset my WiFi by putting a pin in a small whole in my internet or modem and about 1 minuet later it worked!!!!!! Just search up on YouTube how to factor reset your wifi and it will work i promise it will work.
(shameless self-advertizing removed by mod)

@wdwdwdw I will give this a try later and see if this fixes it for me. I'll post later with my results.

@Thomas Taber Well?

Ah jeez. It's simple but stupid. IDK if it's the same for me as it is you, but somehow all of the servers' ips and names got deleted/possibly corrupted. I just deleted all of them and re-added the servers I could remember.

Hello guys,
I had the same problem - io.netty... and it looks like the problem was with ports. I´m playing on the server, where MC didn´t run on the default port 25565 but 35565.
I asked the admin to change it to the default settings(25565) and I´m able to connect to the game (but only through direct connect).
Maybe will be this solution useful for others.
Cheers,

this is effecting me in 18w07c

i have the same issue

This error. For me at least was caused because my modem or/and router's firewall.
So i'v made some steps to hopefully help you:
(1.) Make sure you let minecraft through your host machines firewall. You can access your firewall by opening the integrated program "Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security." Then allow all "Java(TM) Platform SE binary" Rules by left clicking on the rule and clicking properties. Then if it is not already allowed. Toggle the rule action to "Allow This Connection" Also go into the advanced tab and check both Private and Public settings.
(2.) (if your router does not have a firewall just do your modem instead) Go into your router's or modem's control panel(The Layout May Vary) by entering 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into a web address(this vary's depending if the ip address is connected to your router or modem) then find you firewall settings then add a rule with TCP and UDP selected then put in minecraft's default port witch is 25565 into the port start and port end then make sure you enable "Traffic In" and "Traffic Out".
(3.) Also make sure if you have a vpn to turn if off as it may cause this error
That is basically it i hope this helps anyone who encounters this error

I run a small Vanilla server. We recently restarted the whole server since two, out of fourteen, of our users were having this same issue. We attempted all sorts of troubleshooting to find what was causing the issue, to no avail. So I went through this whole process:
• Wiped UNIX Server.
• Switched to a Windows 2016 Server
• Reset and reconfigured Servers Router/Router Firewall
• Reset and reconfigured Servers Firewall
• Configured 3 different routes to the server through 3 different IP's/DNS'
• Started from scratch, no carried over Server Files.
• Switched to 18w30b Snapshot.
I did all of this and everything seemed to work, seemed. The server has been running fine since the launch of 18w30b, about six days I think. Until yesterday, with no change to any settings anywhere a single user, unrelated to the first two before, is no longer able to connect. He has this same error. I have done all the testing I can and still have not been able to find a cause or solution. Nor do I think I have come close to isolating the issue. All I can say is through all the meticulous testing I have done, it is an issue with Minecraft/Mojang and not the end users.
EDIT: Seems like a potential solution is for Mojang to update the version of netty-all that the server.jar file uses.

@Rengoku Tokisaki I'm truly sorry for the error you are currently encountering, did you follow any of the methods i'v given in my previous post and did any of them work. This problem is not the cause of mojang, but by the connection of either the server in which your trying to connect to or by your host machine or/and modems firewall. Netty's job is to authenticate your account to the server in which your trying to connect to, by sending two requests, one being to mojang's database where it finds info connected to your account(Stuff like your skin, name, uuid, token and other important info), the other being the server in which your trying to connect to, your host machine sends a request to that server looking for info like(whether or not you have permission to connect to the server("whitelist"), your inventory and other NBT data). and the reason you are unable to connect to the server is because the request sent by your host machine to the server, never reaches the server your trying to connect to, therefor the server your trying to connect to, never receives the required data to allow you to connect to the server. I hope that this helps in some way, and if it does not i hope you can find a way to fix this. - (IGN"TheGameDev"). Note: This is not a bug it is just an error

Hey, I used to have this same problem. Make sure you don't accidentally have port 25565 on port filtering instead of port forwarding in your router/modem.

@Michael Blaine I can guarantee that the issue is not on the users' end. I have every exception written into every firewall needed for users to connect to the server. I have also checked and verified that the user who *was* having issues has their system setup properly.
I would like to stress "*was*" as randomly and without any change to any system the user can now connect to my vanilla server. No change to their system or to any of mine. This clearly points out to me that it is an issue with the version of io.netty that Mojang is using for the server.
Further more I can verify that the server (logs were checked) was receiving their connection. Correctly authenticated the user and allowed them to join. Only for them to load in properly and then be disconnected moments later with the io.netty error.
In the past week this has happened to two of my users on my server. However since upgrading to 18w32a this has not been an issue. We have made the decision to stick with this version as it is more stable than the full 1.13 release in every way.

I have this issue as well.
I have tried absolutely everything suggesting: Restarted internet, reset internet, restarted computer, uninstalled/reinstalled minecraft, adjusted modem setting to allow Minecraft through, adjusted Firewall settings to allow Minecraft through, disabled firewall, EVERYTHING. Nothing has fixed this issue. It has got to be on Mojang's end, or another solution not yet found.

I also have this issue with a 5 slot port-forwarded server, like the above comment nothing is working

you have to fully reset your modem like updating your modem to play minecraft has nothing to do with it, by the ways if there is no update then fully restart the type of internet connection you get, when i say restart i don't mean unplug i been the software!

@Ali Nigga I can say without a doubt, at least my case, this is incorrect. In the past I managed a Data Center in Lenoir NC for Google. I can say without a doubt I have everything properly configured to run a simple Minecraft server. No amount of updating a modem that is already running the latest firmware and has all proper configurations will resolve an issue that isn't a hardware issue.
(Once again this is for my personal use case so I can only imagine would be, at least, similar to others' issue.)

@Ali Nigga I have completely reset my modem. Nothing changed.

I've found a solution for me.
For some reason, MalwareBytes anti-malware was blocking my connection to the server WITHOUT TELLING ME. Nothing on Windows Defender, nothing on my Modem settings- this one, single, program.
Here's what you need to do to check if something is blocking the server connection (at least, what worked for me):
type "cmd" in the start menu and open the cmd "Command Prompt" utility/tool/whatever
type "ping" then after that type the IP of the server you wish to join
After this, Malwarebytes gave me a notification saying "we've blocked your connection to this address due to fraud" (which was wrong) and that's how I found out it was Malwarebytes' issue.
hopefully this helps someone, but from what I've read no two issues of this kind are the same.

@Rengoku This is 100% an issue with minecraft. Like I said several posts above I've played minecraft for years and never had any issues connecting to servers. Then all of a sudden I can't anymore. Tried everything, reinstalled minecraft, reset router, hard reset router, allowed it through my firewall, allowed it through the router, even disabled windows firewall. I can ping any server no problem and get a perfect response. No other game has connection problems that I play so something within the past months changed with Minecraft and now I can no longer play multiplayer. Pretty sad that Mojang doesn't even acknowledge this bug, and at one point they even tried to close the issue saying it was duplicated by something else. As you can see it looks like no one is even assigned to this report anymore.
Edit: Just looked at the date of my last post and its been 8 months so I really don't see this ever being fixed.

Is there really no solution?
Buying a new router doesn't work or anything?
I really want to host a server with my friends, but I can't get around this error. Where can I stay most updated about this bug, here?

I don't think its a problem with Minecraft, but more of the host and person trying to join... I don't have this problem, but for the people that do, I wish you good luck.
Is this still an issue in Minecraft 1.13.1?

For me it is ,but ONLY when try to log in to REALM.
-time to time i can play with no problem but not often,i can try log on for a few days with no luck and suddenly i join the server , its like there is a problem with where this servers is located, if that make any sense.

I also have this issue as well. However, it's only doing this with one server and not the rest of the servers. I do not know how to fix it.
Yes, the update is 1.13.1

I have the same issue in 1.13.1

Same issue here - LAN and private server that never had an issue previously. Tested five PC's.
Was advised to lodge on a support forum rather than "bug" forum.

Same issue with the 1.13.2

If there is a problem with netty then everyone playing that version of minecraft will have the same problem(As netty's version does not differ per person, but per minecraft version), A suggestion: try manually changing the version of your current netty file to a higher or lower version, an see if that makes a difference, but before you can change any of the libraries within the libraries folder without it automatically replacing itself you must change this line within your current minecraft version's .json file from this: "
{"downloads": {"artifact": {"path": "io/netty/netty-all/4.1.25.Final/netty-all-4.1.25.Final.jar", "sha1": "d0626cd3108294d1d58c05859add27b4ef21f83b", "size": 3823147, "url": "https://libraries.minecraft.net/io/netty/netty-all/4.1.25.Final/netty-all-4.1.25.Final.jar"}}, "name": "io.netty:netty-all:4.1.25.Final"}"
to something like this(depends on netty version): "
{"downloads": {"artifact": {"path": "io/netty/netty-all/#.#.##.Final/netty-all-#.#.##.Final.jar", "sha1": "%corespondent spa id%", "size": %change to file size%, "url": "https://libraries.minecraft.net/io/netty/netty-all/#.#.##.Final/netty-all-#.#.##.Final.jar"}}, "name": "io.netty:netty-all:#.#.##.Final"}"
I hope that everyone that is encountering this problem can find a fix

I fear that this can not be fixed by mojang as netty is owned by "the netty project" and I don't think mojang has the authority to modify their files, if anything the only onces who can fix this is "the netty project"(If it is fixable, as the problem is related to network problems not coding)

Hi All, especially Michael Blaine. Having the same issue, first time playing minecraft in almost a year and was trying to host a world for my children to play with me. We are all having this netty error. Have updated to 1.13.2
I am not very technically savvy, is there anyway someone could take the time to help a dummy like me with a step by step solution (1., 2., 3. kind thing). For example, I saw the solution above (Nov. 6) but I am not sure how to manually change the version of my netty file. I do not know what would be a reasonable higher or lower version number and I am not 100% sure which are the variable fields and what should be put in them for the command line to prevent automatic replacement of the netty file by Minecraft upon launch.
Any help is very much appreciated (especially by my children)!
Hi! As far as I know, there's more than one cause of this issue (for example, when this happened to me, I had an issue with my firewall). It's probably best if you join the #minecrafthelp IRC chat, as that's more suitable for fixing technical problems like these.

Thanks violine, ok maybe I will try that irc chan. I am pretty sure I deactivated all the internal network firewalls (this server is just being played on a LAN).

Before reporting that you have the same issue, please ensure you don't have any software installed on the Known Incompatible Software list.

I do not have any software from the incompatible software list. I've ruled out firewalls on windows 10, my router. I've ruled out port forwarding.
On my machine using a java program I wrote (A TCP server I wrote for fun) I'm able to port forward and route connections to that server from a client application I've created and delivered to friends. All that works, but no one is able to connect to java edition minecraft server 1.13.2 I'm running on the very same machine. Everyone who tries to connect to the minecraft server receives the previously attached screenshot.
My only hope now is to downgrade minecraft versions and see if I can find one where this problem doesn't exist.

Same issue here, client-side. I have no incompatible software, and disabled my firewall. Only one server is causing the error (but I know others are able to connect to it). It seems to be a WiFi problem, since I was able to connect to the IP through an in-server chat app on my Android using mobile data. I'm starting to think it may be an issue outside of anything Mojang can do, especially since it's been two years since it first started popping up.
I'd be curious to see if anyone else with this issue is able to connect using PickaxeChat or something similar with mobile data.

I had the same issue and my solution was to enable these check boxes in the Windows Defender Firewall

I know this is an old thread, but last comment is a month ago, so I guess it's fine. I have seen anyone respond to Joshua Bowman's solution as follows:
>Ah jeez. It's simple but stupid. IDK if it's the same for me as it is you, but somehow all of the servers' ips and names got deleted/possibly corrupted. I just deleted all of them and re-added the servers I could remember.
This worked fine for me, no need to disable any firewalls or anything. I should also mention that when I had this issue, I actually had 1 server that still worked, so maybe this only works for some people in this specific case.

I also have this same exact error/bug. I've done all possible solutions I can find such as excluding from firewall, allowing java, disabling firewall itself etc. I can connect to my server using my local ip but when I use my public IP, I get that error/bug. I already port forwarded this as well. This is for the server that I created in order to play with my friends.

I don't really know why this is happening to me... I got rid of all the Forge clients I had, I allowed my firewall settings to let Minecraft through, I updated Java to the latest version, I've switched my laptop's internet connection on and off, but I'm still getting refused from getting into my Realm. I don't understand what I could be doing wrong...

My antivirus is not the problem and neither is the firewall. So how do I solve this problem?
This is not a support forum, but a bug tracker. It's probably best if you join the #minecrafthelp IRC chat, as that's more suitable for fixing technical problems like these.

can you just give us a real solution?

If the server is hosted by you or a friend, or if you can contact the server owner. Have them reset the server. I've had to deal with this situation many times as an admin for a server as well as having this issue first hand. And it is a nasty one to deal with at times. Unfortunately there is not much else you can do without reinstalling everything from scratch, restarting your computer, make sure you port forwarded, reset firewall options and allow them again and hoping all of that fixes it.
If you can, try logging into minecraft on a separate computer and see if that works as well.

Sooooo any solutions for this or what yet? I've already tried the minecraft chat and no one gets back to you and it disconnects you after 5 mins of waiting.

This is the generic error message when trying to connect to a server that isn't available from your end, or it's actually no server at all (example: try connecting to the IP "google.com" - this error will show). As much as I don't like seeing this issue in tech support, it's not a bug with the game.

I had this issue today. I came online to fix it and kinda started freaking out when I saw all this stuff about resetting modems and server and extending ports and stuff. I ended up bringing it up in the Discord chat of the server I was trying to get on to see if anyone else was having the issue and get a feel for which comment the situation I was in was closest to.
Turns out the server is down. Nothing complex, the server is just down.
If you're having this issue, especially if it's only one server, I'd suggest hitting up a mod or admin if you can to see if it's as simple as that. Good luck to anyone whose situation isn't as simple as that.

this happens to me (invalid session restart the game and the launcher)

This thing is happening to me but on my realm

This thing is happening to me but on my realm too

This also happened on my realm today, should this ticket be re-opened?

This also started happening on our realm last night, all other network connections are working fine

Considering all of the people having problems with this really recently at the same time, this might not be on our end then. This sucks and I really want to play on my realm.
Edit: Mojang has addressed the issue on [their twitter|https://twitter.com/MojangStatus] so at least it's not us lol.

If you have this issue on Realms, it is tracked here: REALMS-3903

An error occurred, please try again later, I've been trying for several days straight now.

The same thing happened to me and I have been trying for 3 weeks now.

I also have the same issue and I have tried everything in the book as to how you can possibly fix it and nothing has worked.

Can confirm, it's still in 1.17.1.
