Just opened the launcher this second, got another auto update and now managed to login, on mac 10.11.6. all mac users try opening the launcher.
I received this today:-
[media]so there might be a fix for anyone on Windows, however i'm on a mac and the mac launcher is still not functioning properly.
@Stupida, Yeah thanks for the advice but if I didn't have internet access i wouldn't be able to access this site. This isn't a network issue. It's an issue with the launcher
Spoke too soon. I quit the launcher and reopened it and we are back to :-

opened the launcher today, no update but this happened. Now when i log in i get this
[media]I already paid for Java so this shouldn't be happening. Its telling my to switch accounts but the Mojang account i bought Java with was migrated so i can't login with that account anymore. But at least its progress. I can login now, it just needs a few more tweaks to be able to play. Positive results which shows they are working on the issues.
@Kiara, If you look up in the comments about 3/4 days ago a person called Donuts1000 mentioned that staff at Mojang are working on it and they were hoping for there to be a fix in the coming weeks if not sooner.
I know its frustrating but we should keep in mind that staff have said that they were hoping to "have a fix in the coming weeks" for the mac issue and that was only 3 days ago. All we can do is be patient.
they also probably have to balance between what they need for 1.18+. They say they might have an idea of why its happening so that's positive and all we can do is be patient
@Patty Snider, totally get the frustration but staff have said in the comments on this report that they are working on it and they're hoping they'll have a fix out in a few weeks (maybe sooner) so i know it can be frustrating but at least we know they're working on it.
Same for me, Mac os 10.11.6, received an update to the launcher but no change. Still can't login with Microsoft account. Glad it's being worked on though.
@Bookiebonster , Thanks for the advice but generally if someone is using an older os its because they're mac wont update higher or there could be other reasons like compatibility for other programs or who knows. But good to hear they are working on it

Seems all reports on this issue are rolled into this one no matter the operating system. It just doesn't get updated on the report

Yes i am on mac, 10.11.6. This should be an easy fix as the same thing happened on the last update and they patched it a few days after i noticed it so hopefully the fix is coming soon. Also hopefully this doesn't happen every time they send us an update for the launcher. I haven't heard from support in a couple of days so I'm hoping that means they are currently working on the fix.
Using a third party client is like putting a tape on a leak, a temporary fix. The original issue needs to be addressed. This exact thing happened 2 months ago during the last auto update so they should be able to fix it.
Worth noting that the bug report states it as effecting mac os 10.9 only but there are lots of bug reports being merged covering other mac os
Have an active support ticket but the support agent doesn't seem to understand that its an issue with the launcher. At first they suggested i was playing on an account that didn't contain a Minecraft profile/username (Not correct) then they said the issue must be with the Microsoft account itself (also not correct as i can login to minecraft.net and xbox with it) so i should contact Microsoft (which wouldn't help as the account is working fine). It's an issue that happened in September (2 months ago when the launcher was updated) then they sent out another update to fix the issue, now we've been given another update which has broken the issue again. Can't login to the Minecraft Launcher at all with Microsoft account and Mojang account was already migrated so cant login with that either.
same thing is happening for me. First time i tried to load 18 and 18.1 i got the error message then the launcher froze and couldn't quit so had to restart the whole system. Now when i try it just crashes and quits while "preparing". Also no crash reports seem to be being made, i've checked the files. Hopefully we get a fix soon. Also as a heads up there seems to be a ticket out there with many many more reports of the same issue (MCL-20783) so it is amore widespread issue than this ticket would suggest
