After a bit of testing, I've found that this appears to happen exclusively after the sniffer does its 'long sniff' animation. Here's a vid of the first time I saw it, after spawning several more and watching them for a bit, it seems to happen almost every time after that specific animation, even if only for a few frames, and only after that specific animation.
