Having the exact same issue, built a farm the day before update which worked perfectly. Since the update as soon as you turn on the lever the sugar cane gets knocked off. Also other Redstone farms not working.
This has been happening on our realm too, but also before the update. Also happens if you log out in the nether, once you log in you die in the void...
