In my previous comment, I said “The copy I just created of the August backup seems to be saving (I am not getting the error about it failing).”

I have since learned that this copy is local to my Xbox only. I used the “Duplicate world” button to make this copy. The reason I am no longer seeing the error is because no attempt is made to sync this save to the cloud. The August backup itself runs into the same “Failed due to quota” error.

Another note, I tried to fix this with the realm solution many have suggested. I cannot get the world to upload to realms. It does not matter if I use the August backup or the copy I created. It usually fails immediately after the “Export in Progress” screen. Some attempts have completed the upload to 100% before failing. I know this is a different issue, just putting the info here in case it helps.

Unfortunate update on my issue here:
I was playing a different world with friends that I created about a month ago (which was saving fine), then I got a message about not being able to save any more data to my console and instructions to clear local saves from the Xbox. I tried clearing the local saves of other games first, but that didn’t fix the issue. Upon following said instructions to clear local saves, I lost the most recent version of my 2019 world (expected since it wasn’t syncing to the cloud). Not only did I lose recent changes, I lost every version of it that was not a specifically downloaded backup (last version I have is from August 2025 named from when it was downloaded). The renamed copy I was playing is completely gone.

The copy I just created of the August backup seems to be saving (I am not getting the error about it failing). I don’t have a second console to confirm that it is actually uploaded to the cloud. Still shows as 2.3 GB.

(Unrelated to this issue, but the world created a month ago won’t open after the clearing of the local saves done about 24 hours after receiving the message about local saves failing. Despite my factual and reasonable tone above, I am livid right now.)

I’m not sure if my input will be enough or if you need the original poster for this. I just checked today and I am still having this same issue.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open world.

  2. Run around a bit, place a block, break a block, etc. I am doing this around coordinates 200, 80, -400 if that makes a difference.

  3. Open pause menu and select “Save & Quit”

  4. Watch Saving world screen for about 30 seconds.

  5. Get the Syncing World Data failure message.

Local save successful but cloud sync failed due to quota. Free cloud space by deleting worlds from the settings menu.

Observed Results:

  • Error message above shown.

  • World does not save in cloud.

Expected Results:

  • The world should show a Saving world screen, then close (and be saved in the cloud).

Additional details in case you need them:

  • I have an active Xbox essentials subscription.

  • World was created on a realm in 2019 and downloaded after realm subscription was cancelled in 2025.

  • World is completely vanilla (no mods nor resource packs).

  • World name is “The Kingdom” (no special characters in name).

  • World is 2.3 GB in size. I think this is the actual world size.

  • I have deleted more than 3 GB of save data from the cloud to ensure I was not hitting a storage limit.

  • Other worlds save without issue.

  • I am usually playing the world with multiplayer disabled, but sometimes I will have the world open for multiplayer.

I was having this issue a few months ago. It seemed like it was working again for a bit. After the most recent update, I am having issues again. The world I am playing is about 2.2 GB. As I said, it was working not long ago (the 2.2 GB world was being synced to the cloud without issue).

Side note: The 2.2 GB is the actual file size. It is not one of the inflated files that others ran into. It is a realm I started with friends back in 2019. One of those friends really liked exploring. Every new update, I have to venture further out to get the new stuff. Every new update, the file size increases just a little bit. I would really like this to be backed up to the cloud.
