When adding items to a furnace which is already cooking some items of the same type, the total amount of items is not shown initially.
What I expected to happen was the added items would go into the furnace with the already cooking items.
What actually happened was the added items appeared to disappear until the next item finished cooking, then the proper number of items was displayed.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Place less than 1 stack of cook-able items in furnace (eg. cobblestone).
2. Put in fuel.
3. Add more of the same cook-able item to the top slot of the furnace.
4. Observe that the number of the cook-able items does not change immediately but instead changes after another item finishes cooking.

I have tried it again and you are right, it seems that I can't reproduce it. Should I delete the issue? It did happen the first time. I was cooking up some spruce wood to make charcoal. I used 2 spruce planks as a fuel to cook 3 logs and then I used charcoal to cook some more. Before the 2 logs were done, I moved the one charcoal I had at the time to the fuel slot and added 28 more logs to the top slot in the furnace. When I put the logs in the top slot, the number did not change from 1 to 29 but instead stayed at 1 and I though that I had just lost my wood but once the one log finished cooking, the other 28 took its place.
Also, through testing to see if I could recreate it under the same circumstances above, I had a similar graphical issue with the spruce planks disappearing from the fuel slot after one of the 2 cooked. It only happened once and I could not reproduce it but I did take note of the direction in which the furnace was facing in case it is a directional bug. It was facing south. The time the other bug occurred, the furnace was also facing south. So maybe that has something to do with it.
Can confirm, but pretty hard to reproduce: Add more items into the "to smelt" slot at the same moment as it is done coocking.
Might be related to MC-8022.
I just got a (probably related) bug, 1.5.1 "pre-release" (latest version as of this moment, title screen reads 1.5.1), Windows 7.
I was smelting logs into charcoal, and I removed the charcoal from the output slot at the same moment that a log (2nd from last) finished smelting. The counter for said slot read '2' still, but it was a visual bug; when it finished smelting, the "two" logs disappeared.
Cannot reproduce.
Put 10 cobblestone in a furnace
Wait for 1 to cook
Put additional 10 in the furnace
