Loading files from data packs and sounds ignores sub folders (causing e.g. no sounds at all in 17w43a)

As the title states:

[17:05:01] [Server thread/ERROR]: Couldn't read function medabots_server:stagerunsnowfield_a_second_go from medabots_server:functions/stagerunsnowfield_a_second_go.mcfunction

the file is actually located in medabots_server/functions/stage/run/snowfield_a_second_go.

The files simply do not load if they are in a sub folder, regardless of whether they are valid or not.

This is the case for:

  • Advancements (Custom packs only)

  • Loot tables (Custom packs only)

  • Functions (Custom packs only)

  • Sounds (Vanilla only)

In the case of sounds, this produces error messages like these, for all of the sound events in the game:

Missing sound for event: minecraft:ambient.cave
Missing sound for event: minecraft:weather.rain.above

Just to clarify, given the MC-121279 link: Is this the right ticket for vanilla Minecraft (no resource packs) not playing any sound or music whatsoever?

Yes, sounds.json ignores sub folders when looking for sound files, so this is the ticket.

(Actually for only vanilla)

My own issue MC-121346 which is marked as a resolved duplicate is not using any resource packs, not changing any folders (using subfolders), or anything else described here.

It is a completely vanilla install of Minecraft, with default values for everything.

@unknown: Same issue.

@unknown Unfortunately, the description of this ticket is completely different, referring to a server issue, custom packs, and the message "Couldn't read function". Users such as myself cannot identify this as relating to their problem, so you may be playing 'whack-a-mole' resolving people who simply have "No sound in 17w43a".

Can the description not be modified to be more meaningful?

This ticket pertains to functions, advancements, loot tables, AND sounds. This is clearly stated in the description and here.

This is the case for:
  Advancements (Custom packs only)
  Loot tables (Custom packs only)
  Functions (Custom packs only)
  Sounds (Vanilla only)

Unfortunately, "Loading files from data packs and sounds ignores sub folders" does not sound anything like "No Sound". It is unreasonable to expect us to relate that problem to the descriptions in this ticket. This one describes completely different messages to what we are experiencing.

We are installing plain, vanilla, unaltered minecraft and get no sound.

This describes a server, with "Couldn't read function" error, and 'data packs and sounds ignores sub folders'.

It's all the same underlying issue, and fixing that issue will fix all the problems.

But the issue should still probably be updated to make it more search-visible for sounds problems.
