Throwing an ender pearl in a nether portal has strange behaviors

I have also done this bug on 1.13-pre6. Both times this was done on a server in survival. Here is a video of me doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIjO-Un4SWY . It isn't consistent, but maybe that is just because i have blocks behind it and it works when i throw the pearl inside the stair hole. Also sometimes it doesnt teleport me to the nether coords in overworld, but just a few blocks behind the portal, like the pearl went through it. I couldn't replicate that in the video, but i have done this on stream: https://www.youtube.com/edit?ar=1&o=U&video_id=7yHhpIlVqac . I haven't also done that after the stream.

That looks weird indeed, are those coordinates your spawn chunks or the blocks above the portal?

Urielsalis, as i said in the description and as i showed in my video, it sometimes teleports me to the nether portal's nether coordinates, but in the overworld and sometimes just behind the portal (i have a room there). Those aren't spawn chunks, but close.

I'm having trouble reproducing this. Are there any steps I can take to make this behavior more likely?

Alex Coats, I have tested it a little bit and it seems it doesnt work when there are no blocks behind the portal (then the pearl just goes through) and when there is a block behind the portal (then you just teleport there), but it works when you throw it in a stair's hole. It worked most for me when i was standing around 5 blocks from the portal and threw it right in the stair hole. (not really a hole just cut out part 😃). Maybe the bug is from the new stair hit boxes?

I checked and this still works in the full release of 1.13 . And i have been teleported in my secret room too.

Gurkis, I have tested it as well, if you throw it in the corner so it hits (or nearly hits?) the obsidian from an angle and slightly below the portal it will teleport you quite reliably if you aim it right.

I have attached screenshots showing it teleports to the exact coordinates of the nether portal (in the nether) in the overworld instead. Also aiming the way I do in the screenshot semi-reliably reproduces this glitch.

Moesh

Throwing pearls through portal does nothing.

@unknown "Throwing Pearls through portal does nothing" seems usually to be the case if there are no blocks behind the portal, which OP had in their setup though.
Aside from that, iirc Pearls should port you also without blocks behind the Portal.
In Creativemode, Pearls insta-teleport you, OW>Hell and vice versa.

I still can reproduce some of the described behaviour, e.g. tested in 1.17.1 Vanilla:

  • Player can port through or rather into blocks that are directly behind the portal, if they are, like OP set it up, stairs and you throw Pearls into stairgaps/"holes", potentially in a specific angle (didn't have time to reproduce reliably).

  • If Player throws Enderpearl against another area other than stairgap, Player "collides" against the blocks behind the Portal, no matter if stairs or fullblocks.
In some occasions, Pearls do travel from OW to Hell without porting you though, likely as Hell is not loaded (haven't tested with 2nd Player loading Hell Portal chunk); as soon as you enter Hell (and thus load it), those Pearls port you within Hell.

I couldn't reproduce the biggest oddity OP showed in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIjO-Un4SWY regarding exact coordinates of Nether Portal in the Overworld, instead of the actual Overworld Nether Portal, but that doesn't mean there couldn't be this or other things that are to my knowledge not WaI, considering I didn't test for very long.

Maybe it would help to change this bugpost's description accordingly to the behaviour in the current version, as this bugpost wasn't updated since19w03c, so maybe some of the described/shown behaviour doesn't exist anymore right now.
Hence describing what for current irregularities are observed, and new deviations ould be added as soon as they would be maybe observed.
Plus a description how the actual expected/intended Pearl-Portal-mechanic is supposed to be.
