Right clicking a horse with nothing in your hand will get you kicked from the server with an NPE internal server error and you are unable to join again without deleting your player file. No errors appear in the server console.
This is a log of logging in, right clicking the horse, and being kicked.

I actually had the issue with boats and minecarts too, so it's probably any rideable thing.
Same issue... This is a bit, major.
Confirmed. I don't like this. 😞
Had this problem too
Confirmed, although I didn't see this until my ticket was closed duplicate. Here is my summary in case extra info is helpful:
--------
Bug occurs in both game modes. Player spawned Horse using Spawn Egg in creative, then attempted to right-click to mount. Client disconnects with error Java.lang.NullPointerException; server reports:
2013-04-18 21:28:11 INFO 4am/108.34.217.76:1024 logged in with entity id 1551 at (212.62373750401767, 66.7000000178814, 305.9407252902083)
2013-04-18 21:28:11 SEVERE Reached end of stream
2013-04-18 21:28:12 INFO 4am lost connection: disconnect.endOfStream
2013-04-18 21:29:24 SEVERE Reached end of stream
no stacktraces or errors are generated, it seems like bad entity info is written to the map, because players cannot log back in once this happens.
Attempted in both Creative and Survival.
Process:
(fresh map, vanilla 13w16a server, all brand new and clean)
1. Creative player named a Horse spawn egg using an anvil, then attempted to mount. Client kicked with NPE, did not crash. Player could not log back in.
2. 2nd player (logged in this whole time) spawned horse in creative mode (did NOT name using anvil), changed /gamemode 0, then attempted to mount. Same result.
Neither player experinced crash in SSP.
Same issue an I hope this is addressed. It's major.
Replicated issue on SSP Open to Lan.
Player 1 (Host) is able to ride horses, however Player 2 (Client) is unable to and is unable to join server until their player datafile is deleted.
I don't have this kind of issues, but I get Internal Server Error sometime :O
@crazyman are you playing single player or multiplayer?
@Michael Luyten Sinleplayer creative..
Would also like to note that, the horse that was mounted gets duplicated each time the user tries to reconnect.
@crazyman It's not real clear by the top of the job but this error relates to SMP Server Multiplayer and LAN Multiplayer based games only, Single Player works fine
Same happends with boats
Same issue running a multiplayer server.
Mac 10.8.3
snapshot 13w16a
server port changed to 25567 (not sure why, if it all, that would matter)
Here's my rundown... hope it helps!

Ok guys just confirmed the same error when using:
-Boats
-Minecarts
-Saddle on Pig
-Horses
Anything that you "Ride" will fail
A workaround is to block the AttachEntity and EntityMetadata
This happens too on a LAN world
I found that rather than deleting my player.dat file, I type into the server console "/tp <my player name> <friend's player name>" and I hit enter on that as soon as I click login. It appears to break the cycle and allows me to continue playing.
Still cannot ride a horse though.
@Nuxas,
How does one go about blocking the AttachEntity and EntityMetadata?
this is a very big problem it need to be fixed in next snapshot so vote up!
Same here, I believe they will fix it in the next snapshot.
Happens with boats too
Happens with boats and horses, both SMP and SP. Please fix!
Confirmed for horses and boats here. Can't re-login after that.
Anyone try this with minecarts or saddled pigs?
Yes. Both give a NPE.
See MC-13623.
same with minecarts
Same for me, really annoying
Same here, I right clicked my mule and now I can't connect anymore.
I guess I need to go back to 1.5.1 to fix it.
same issue here - in dev launcher i got an error that said something about 1_6 has not been released yet.flag
if that helps at all
setup is windows 8 desktop
and mc server running on ubuntu 12.04
You don't need to go back to 1.5.1 to fix it. Just NBT edit your player.dat file and delete the "Riding" group of tags, and avoid getting in/on any vehicles until they fix it (which should have happened already imo, wth?)
must be a difficult bug to sniff out.... and squash.
Or the fact that bugs only get fixed in snapshots, and they are in no rush to fix it because its only a snapshot and not an ACTUAL update?
Hope Jeb will fix this in 13w17a
So everyone that play multiplayer get this bug? How could they have missed it. 😞
Got this too when taming horses for a horse race by me and my dad
Confirmed fixed in 13w16b
This is NOT fixed for me in 13w16b, in SP or SMP.

Please provide a crash report so that we can look into it, Sean.
Here it is: http://pastie.org/7710252
I run a SMP server, and have to NBT edit player.dat files and delete the "riding" group of tags so players can log back in afterward.
Hope that helps!
Confirmed this is still broken in 13w17a for both SP and SMP. 😞
Crash report: http://pastie.org/7720100
First of all, that is a different crash. Secondly, your Java version is out of date. Please update your Java to the latest version: http://www.java.com/en/download/. Keep in mind that when using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit OS the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp.
Please report if the issue persists with the latest Java version.
1.7 is Java 7 mind you anon, its another terminology or something used by oracle to name versions. It is misleading tho.
The newest version is update 21, not update 17.
Different crash or not, the same event is causing it with the same result. I updated Java to 21, no change.
SP Crash: http://pastie.org/7721509
SMP Crash: http://pastie.org/7721507
now it's fixed will I be able to log into the LAN worlds i was kicked from again?
bump
It says "resolved", but this issue STILL is not fixed in 13w18c. Is this being looked into? Pretty frustrating that no one on my server can ride a horse without crashing and derping their player file. :/
Riding into a Cactus in the desert by mistake made 13w18c crash for me.
Removing the riding section in my <playername>.dat file on the server fixes the issue temporarily.
EDIT:
I was running 13w18a server and 13w18c client, upgrading the server to 13w18c seems to have fixed it.
I have a question. In the normal game without a server, I have the issue of not being able to ride horses. I run Win 7 java is up to date and so is the game. I right click a horse with anything and it merely kicks (unless its done with a lead) and then walks off. If this ticket doesn't cover that I can just go make a new bug report but I can't find anyone else with this issue.
The horse needs to be tamed first. More info on the wiki: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Horse#Taming
