MC-1466

Monsters Spawning In light levels of Eight on SMP.

I am building a tower on a man made island and for most of the time there are no mob spawns except for squids, Iron golems, and slimes (Theres a 2x2 chunk slime farm on the island).

Ocassionally I will spot a creeper, a skeleton, a spider, or a zombie roaming around on the ground floor. I've searched every spot for light levels of 7 and below and there are only light levels of 8 and above.

Are you checking the light levels at your feet on the surfaces?

I'm checking the levels at my feet.

I realize that f3 checks the light levels at head level. Though, mobs were never able to spawn like this in the past(in my experience) with a level 7 light on the ground and a level 8 above that.

Unable to reproduce. Tested on a server:

  • went up high so ground below doesn't affect the mob spawning

  • build a platform with a glowstone roof so that all blocks on the platform had a light level of 8 - no spawns

  • raised the roof by 1 block - alsmost instant mob spawns

Im not sure on which report I must comment now. But, I just leaved the game to report this:
That area where the zombie appeared, few step from there I saw a skeleton and had to kill it. So I went to check out where the heck it came from. While I was standing there A Enderman simply apeared by my side. There is any explanation for that? Always exists one explanation.
I am myself a programer and I know how dificult is sometimes to reproduce a bug. I ask you to reconsider this. And I have a guess: maybe there is some kind of spawn point that force mob to appear but that is not used anymore in-game.

Its related to the MC-5530.

Ok first of all Endermen have the ability to teleport from anywhere to anywhere they like, happend one teleported right infront of you. Secondly this game has very simple mechanics whether a mob can spawn or not: if it's dark, mobs spawn - if it's light, mobs do not spawn. Also the game provides the simplest and cheapest way of preventing mobs from spawning: Torches! But if you insists of putting as little torches down as possible it is up to you to make sure every single block a mob can spawn is lit enough. As I tested sufficiently enough light levels above 7 prevent mobs from spawning.

Light levels at my head were all 9 or better. At my feet it would be 8. Also, this only started happening a couple days ago. I've never had this trouble before, and I use this design a lot. Also, the zombie appeared in the room directly over the one I was in, I was definitely within 24 blocks.
(My report, MC-13468, was duped to this one. See it for my specifics.)
