Fullscreen mode does not work properly if using multiple monitors [caused by faulty nVidia driver]

Mod Notice

This is caused by the nVidia 430.39 driver. Roll back the driver in order to fix the issue. If you need assistance with that, please contact 💬 Community Support.

For most Geforce cards, the older driver can be downloaded from https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/146343

Hello,

well my problem is when I launch my minecraft (launcher custom or not) it starts on my 2 screens, my main screen is "freeze", it is impossible for me to interact with minecraft on my second screen because when I click it puts me back on my desktop, I tried to move in windowed and to put it back in full screen but it doesn't work, this bug doesn't happen to me on the other programs.

Thank you for helping me out because it's extremely disturbing.

I fixed this bug, it is caused by the nvidia 430.39 driver, just install an older driver!

Installing an older driver is not a fix...  Latest GeForce Game Ready Driver is 430.64 as of this writing, and this problem persists.

Issue persists with latest Driver: 430.64.

This issue is marked as closed; will it be addressed, or are we never able to update graphics drivers, ever again? o.O

Ask nVidia ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess if nVidia won't release a fix anytime soon, Mojang will have to hack a workaround into the game or something, if that's possible.

How is a single game not working the fault of an entire graphics company?

Minecraft is the only game affected by this. Do you have a bug number on the Nvidia side I can reference?

In the ten years of this games development, I've never seen such lack of ownership taken for it's intellectual property.

Minecraft is not the only game affected https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/bmnsx8/driver_43064_faqdiscussion/

Battlefield 5 and Rage 2 are too, between others. Nvidia is probably aware of the issue and should release a fix soon, as has happened before

The previous ticket when they broke it in 2017 was MC-112780, note that is resolved the same way

We point to community support as they have the tools to help users downgrade their driver until Nvidia releases a hotfix

  1. Minecraft is the only application demonstrating the behaviour of launching on two monitors.

  2. Minecraft isn't listed in any of the comments in the Reddit post you've linked.

  3. Battlefield 5 and Rage 2 are not problematic with the latest drivers, Tested.

  4. "Nvidia is probably aware of the issue."  Suggests you haven't actually checked, and that you're guessing on someone working on it.  The growing concern is no one at Mojang has looked into this issue to verify whether it's actually a problem with how you're rendering your game, or not...  "Let's wait and see if it fixed itself" is the utmost of reactive responses...  Should we try turning it off and on again, too?

  5. The previous ticket, MC-112780 has nothing to do with the behaviour of this issue, and I don't see how it's a relevant reference.

Java Minecraft certainly remains unplayable for thousands of children who have no idea how to submit Jira bug reports, and the ones who have are seemingly shut down by Mods doing everything they can to provide reasons for why this isn't being investigated.

slow clap

I know that you feel we are just trying to shut down the issue, but there is nothing Mojang did to cause it, and the fix has to come from Nvidia as they are the ones that broke it on their game ready driver for Rage 2.
The crashes and issues are random(only half of the team can recreate it, myself not included), varied(there are atleast 4 more issues related to this driver), and affecting multiple games(I can recreate in Battlefield 5 for example, not everyone can the same as this cannot be recreated by everyone)

For example, some people are seeing a "pixelated" view of the menu(where options, singleplayer and multiplayer are), others are outright crashing, others are having your issue and im probably not remembering more of them

For now the only thing we can tell the community is to downgrade and wait for the fix by Nvidia, we know it sucks but this has happened before(causing other problems, thats the ticket I linked) and their response was fast

We appreciate everyone reporting this issues and you are welcome to report new ones, this one unfortunately its caused by something external to Minecraft so its marked by Invalid. That doesn't mean we don't think its a real issue(As we are dealing with a lot of those in IRC), just that there is nothing we can do from Minecraft to fix it

I hoped that answers your questions, if it doesn't I would ask you to create a thread in reddit.com/r/mojira as to avoid having more discussions in this ticket(as Mojira is not meant to be a place for discussions, with that subreddit filling that role)

EDIT:

I would like to add that Minecraft uses LWJGL, which is just a wrapper to OpenGL. OpenGL commands are translated by the driver(that nvidia provides) to be executed. If a driver update breaks that translation someway, then you will have this kind of weird issues.

The latest driver is a Game Ready driver, which usually are changes on the way that this instructions are translated to try to optimize it for a specific game, so its highly likely that one of those optimizations is having side effects which causes this issues here.

Thats why we say its a issue with the Nvidia driver, which Nvidia has to release a hotfix for

3 months on and this problem still persists for me, any updates?

FIX: This is by far the best alternative I can find apart from actually fixing it, but I actually found this because of a different glitch where if I was fullscreen my game would lag and if I wasn't fullscreen obviously it would suck so in my search for an alternative I found this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuyPuOLviNo (Not my video). It runs minecraft perfectly borderless and has worked perfectly for me for years. May be a bit annoying that you have to do it every time at launch but this 100% works for me, and you can definitely get used to it.
