Hello!
Whenever I load into a 1.15.2 world where I have potion effects applied (in my case I had resistance and saturation) they APPEAR to be applied in the inventory GUI but they are not really applied. For example, falling 10 blocks with resistance 255 takes no hearts of damage, but with no resistance applied it should take roughly three (3) hearts. In my case, I tested that in the world when I apply the potion, I take no damage, but loading in with the effect still applied and falling takes damage.
Below I have pictures relating to my issue (the chat displays which pictures have the effect and which do not 🙂).
As a note I am also running OptiFine but I don't believe that it would affect the game on this level, just performance and lower level things.

However, this issue is Invalid.
Your game, launcher or server is modified.
If you can reproduce the issue in a vanilla environment, please create a new ticket.
Any non-standard client/server/launcher build needs to be taken up with the appropriate team, not Mojang.
Any plugin issues need to be addressed to the creator of the plugin or resource pack.
If you have problems on large servers, such as The Hive and Hypixel, please contact them first as they run modified server software.

resistance 5 (4) is enough to grant invincibility, because it removes 100% of all incoming damage FYI, 256 (255) is unneeded
But I also have noticed this bug, where if you give yourself a potion effect, then relog, the GUI shows up, but the potion has no effect; it remembers you have the effect, but it doesn't "USE" the effect, so you will still take the same amount of damage.
