The statistics menu show numbers in wrong columns for blocks and items that cannot be either crafted, or used in survival mode. Portals are shown as having been used 171 times. Coal is shown having been created 6,024 times (yes coal, not charcoal). Ink sacks are shown as having been created 321 times (not possible.) The only explanation I can think of is possibly using time spent on the creative inventory as legitimate ways to obtain this data?

Please reread the statistics window. Inksacs have been used 321 times by yourself, they've not been created 😉
-> Close please, as its not a bug.
So, as stated, the columns are Crafted - Used - Mined
So inksacs in your screenshot is showing:
Crafted = -
Used = 321
Mined = 706
Perfectly fine.
This is still happening in 13w37b, the items that use damage values to determine their type are shown as one single item.
Minecraft clearly tells me that I have crafted 5.538 ink sacs. And 1.357 cooked chicken, 358 cooked steak, 107 cooked mutton, 13 cooked porkchop and 55 stone, . Also I have "0" and "", where "0" is sorted over "".
Also I am supposed to have "used" 210 ink sacs, (155 water bottles, which I strongly believe to be too high and 112 "item.splash_potion.name", displaying as a splash water bottle, which I have never used).
These stats are obviously wrong, I just don't know the reason why.
@@unknown There are two things that aren't intuitive about the statistics:
"Crafting" includes things like smelting and brewing potions.
The items actually represent all items that have the same ID, but different damage values. All dyes are actually one single item, but with different damage values for the different colors. So the 5.538 ink sacs also include all the other colors that you've crafted. Similarly, the water bottles include all the potions.
Screen grabs of the statistics menu. The columns are: times crafted, times used, and times mined for blocks, and times depleted, times crafted, and times used for items.
