Transparent blocks at render distance can be seen through entity nametag backgrounds

The Bug:

Transparent blocks at render distance can be seen through entity nametag backgrounds.

Please note that this is related to MC-202197 and not the same. MC-202197 states that entity nametag backgrounds render behind transparent blocks while this ticket is talking about how transparent blocks at render distance can be seen through entity nametag backgrounds. Please also note that this issue occurs whilst using any graphics settings.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Build the setup as shown in the attachment below or something similar.

[media]
  1. Travel away from the transparent blocks until they are just barely hidden by the fog.

  2. Summon an entity with a custom name by using the command provided below.

    /summon minecraft:evoker ~ ~ ~ {CustomName:"\"MC-235986\"",CustomNameVisible:1b,NoAI:1b,Silent:1b}
  3. Look closely in the direction of the transparent blocks through the nametag of the entity you just summoned.

  4. Take note as to whether or not transparent blocks at render distance can be seen through entity nametag backgrounds.

Observed Behavior:

Transparent blocks at render distance can be seen through entity nametag backgrounds.

Expected Behavior:

Transparent blocks at render distance would not be able to be seen through entity nametag backgrounds.

The summary and description should be made more clear that this particular issue is mainly about transparent blocks that should be invisible as they are out of view distance but instead become visible due to the overlaying name plate.

Transparent blocks being visible through name plates is not a bug per se.

@unknown, you are more than welcome to edit the summary and description to reflect this issue accordingly. 🙂

Just add "at render distance" after "transparent blocks"

All done, thanks @unknown. 🙂

Can confirm in 21w44a, also affects clouds just as in MC-237698.

Thank you for your report!
After consideration, the issue is being closed as Won't Fix.

Please note that this is not the same as Working as Intended, as this bug report correctly describes behavior in the game that might not be the intended or desirable behavior, but it will not be fixed right now. Sometimes, this is because the issue reported is minor and/or impossible to change without large architectural changes to the code base.
