Light sources create Ambient Occlusion

A light source shouldn't create Ambient Occlusion shadows, since the light they emit should realistically cast away the shadow.

This issue actually dates back to Beta 1.8, when the lighting system was rewritten. In versions from Beta 1.3 (smooth lighting was added in this version) to Beta 1.7.3, fully bright light-emitting blocks, such as glowstone, didn't cast any shadows. Lower light-emitting blocks, such as lit furnaces, used to cast some shadows, but they were not as strong as shadows caused by regular blocks.

I've uploaded a few screenshots in this imgur album, showcasing the different appearances of light-emitting blocks when smooth lighting is enabled in different versions.

I believe that this ticket is actually a duplicate of MC-161150. Both this report (MC-249343) and MC-161150 have been triaged with a priority of "Low" so I'm unsure as to which report should be made the parent ticket.

I don't think that it is the same issue. That issue is about low light emitting blocks darkening the cast shadows, this one is about all light emitting blocks casting these shadows in the first place. But there is some definite overlap between the two issues.

I do indeed see your point. If not a duplicate, then definitely related to MC-161150.

Can confirm in 1.19.
