Nether portal blocks facing east or west have incorrect rotations after upgrading old worlds

The bug

I recently converted a world from beta to the latest version and I saw a problem with the nether portal. The rotation of the portal was not correct.

More information can be found in this comment by @unknown.

How to reproduce

  1. Load an instance of Minecraft beta 1.7.3, create a new world, and construct a nether portal

  2. Exit the world and launch the latest snapshot or release of Minecraft

  3. Upgrade the world and look at the nether portal

Got a backup from before updating? If so, please attach it.

If it's too big, upload it to a file hosting site (such as mediafire or dropbox) and share the link.

Please attach a copy of the unconverted world, if you have it. Please also let us know what version the world was converted from. Thank you.

I made one. World created in beta v1.7.3 and converted through v1.6.4 as suggested. I downloaded the original file. It was named wrongrotationworld.zip and contained a valid world called "1.7.3 beta" already upgraded to 1.19 along with a note apologizing for not saving a backup. Their portal was facing east-west.

This bug seems to date back to release 1.7 from my memory.

Also, is it possible to reproduce this with a world created in 1.2.5?
