The bug
Up until 1.13.2, the horizontal and vertical gaps between buttons that are close to each other were of the same size. Since 18w43a, this has no longer been the case, and the middle rows of buttons have a larger horizontal gap than a vertical gap.
How to fix
Make the buttons slightly wider such that they are closer together, closing the gap slightly so that the gap is the same size as the vertical gap.

I think it actually just makes the issue more obvious, the new buttons appear to be placed right and it’s the existing buttons that are wrong.
Can also agree that at this point, reverting the larger buttons to their shorter spacings will fix the new white spacing issue introduced in 26.2, along with the original 1.13.2 issue for which this report was filed for in the first place.
Question; should the “Affected Version/s” list be updated to include the modern releases at this point as well? It seems to get more attention.
