Using an IME keyboard makes some inputs not register

Using an IME keyboard causes some inputs not to be registered, resulting in severe discomfort when moving around.

  • Steps to reproduce the issue

    • 1. Install an IME keyboard(this issue was tested with Korean, Chinese simplified pinyin, and Japanese romaji)

    • 2. Switch to said keyboard

    • 3. Repeatedly press ‘move forward’(default W) key

  • Expected result

    • The player moves forward, just like when using the English keyboard

  • Observed result

    • The player doesn’t move forward(the player might move forward at the first press, but still doesn’t move forward at subsequent presses)

Two videos are attached showing what happens when repeatedly pressing W(move forward) key while using the English keyboard and the Chinese keyboard respectively. When using the English keyboard, the player moves forward. When using the Chinese keyboard, the player doesn’t move forward, and IME-related OS dialog appears.

While this issue may have existed and/or been fixed in other OSes(I have seen some Youtubers few years ago mention that they ‘have to press the input switch button’ to move properly), this is a new issue in my environment. This issue does not occur in 26.1 snapshot-7 and prior versions.

Can confirm in 26.1 Snapshot 9, using macOS 26.4 Beta 1 with Korean IME.

Could you clarify step 2? On macOS (and most other systems) there is a difference between switching to a specific keyboard layout and a specific input mode (usually started with a specific key or key combination like Kana key or Alt+apostrophe - see https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/japanese-input-method/jpimf6ffb247/mac). Switching to IME input mode is treated as user intention to type text instead of sending game inputs.

Upon further testing, this issue seems to occur when the current keyboard mode is an IME-using one(e.g. this issue doesn’t occur when using ‘Romaji’ mode in Japanese keyboard). Also, the IME-related OS dialog seems to have always appeared(although the inputs still registered until 26.1 snapshot 8).

If switching to IME input mode can be seen as the user’s intention to type text, it’s sort of more appropriate to see the former behavior as a bug instead of the new one. But it’s sad to see that ‘bug’ go, as a user of the Korean keyboard(which doesn’t have dialog boxes) who used it for years. Switching between Korean and English keyboard for chatting and gameplay is too easy-to-forget, and checking the current keyboard layout is cumbersome when the game is on fullscreen.
