VERY IMPORTANT: After a thorough investigation, the root cause of this issue started to occur after Exclusive Fullscreen was reintroduced in 26.1 Pre Release 2. Versions 26.1 Snapshot 7 and below do not have this issue. (Borderless Fullscreen was forced and couldn’t be toggled off between versions 26.1 Snapshot 8 and 26.1 Pre Release 1). It’s only until the implementation of SDL3 that it has become a much bigger problem now.

Toggling fullscreen with SDL3 does not resize the window properly and flashes excessively. Elements such as the HUD, GUI, the red mojang studios start up screen, and the screen in general appear visually glitched and broken when fullscreen is toggled with SDL3. This happens with Exclusive Fullscreen enabled and disabled (Borderless) and on both OpenGL and Vulkan rendering backends.

Update: As of 26.3 Snapshot 7, Fullscreen is no longer broken when starting up the game. However, manually toggling fullscreen is still a problem.
|
Update: As of 26.3 Snapshot 9, Fullscreen is once again broken when starting up the game, but in a different way.
|
Update: As of 26.3 Pre Release 2, This is fully fixed on Borderless Fullscreen. Exclusive Fullscreen is still a problem.

This can be seen more clearly when toggling fullscreen from a maximized window in Vulkan. When F11 is pressed, the window gets shuffled around while the screen blinks excessively. (The weird blue window is related to MC-309180 but the “blinking” does not happen in previous snapshots.)
After investigating further, it turns out that the flickering also happens in 26.3 Snapshot 3 but with OpenGL, not Vulkan. In fact, the flickering goes all the way down to 26.1 Pre Release 2, when Exclusive Fullscreen was reintroduced. Borderless Fullscreen was never broken till now, not sure why.
Perhaps with the implementation of SDL3, Turning off Exclusive Fullscreen “tricks” the game into running in a “Borderless” context. This could explain why I no longer lose performance with Borderless Fullscreen in this snapshot.
One more thing which I think is very important to mention. 26.1 Snapshot 7 was also the last version with Exclusive Fullscreen to properly display the red “mojang studios” screen as it booted up. 26.1 Pre Release 2 completely broke this and it’s still broken to this day.
