When Minecraft used GLFW for window management on macOS, Cmd+W did not close the window. I have confirmed this by running 26.3 snapshot 3 and Cmd+W does not close the window. Now, with SDL3, Cmd+W does close the window on Mac (including regardless of whether the “quit shortcuts” are enabled or not).
This is a regression, as Minecraft is not a multi-window or document-based app and the window should not be closable with Cmd+W.

This does still occur on Snapshot 6 with Quit Shortcuts turned on. Arguably it should have been resolved into MC-310101, but because clarification was asked for I will do my best to provide a detailed overview of the issue, along with my own recommendation on how to proceed.
The vast majority of native macOS apps, including Chess (the only built-in game), support closing the window with cmd+W while in full screen. However, Chess is unusual as games go in that it allows you to have multiple game windows open at once, so there is potentially a reason why you would want to close a window but not the app. Minecraft, by contrast, is a single-window app- even if you run two instances of the same version of the game, they are treated as separate applications.
GarageBand and iMovie are free, “pro-lite” Apple apps which support a single window being open at a time. GarageBand supports cmd+W (regardless of full screen status) but iMovie does not support it at all.
I tested three third-party games which support macOS fullscreen: Defense Zone, Prince of Persia: Lost Crown and Tricky Towers. All of them support quitting the game with cmd+Q, and none of them support doing so with cmd+W.
Given that there is both first-and third-party precedent for a single-window app not supporting cmd+W (regardless of full-screen mode), and given that the ability to do so is undesirable (this is now the third report about this issue in the space of three weeks), the best approach would be for Minecraft to stop supporting cmd+W. And by this I mean the option should be gone from the menu bar, as is the case with iMovie and the 3 games I mentioned. (I recant my “this seems intended comment” from on MC-310101.)
As for the Quit Shortcuts setting, although it was implemented to address the cmd+W issue, Mojang may as well keep it around, but rename it to “Quit Shortcut” and remove the mention of cmd+W from the tooltip, and have it default to ON. This would preserve the same default behavior as 26.2 but allow for greater customization. Since the fix of MC-80476, fatfingering cmd+Q is pretty hard to do unless you bind some common action to X or Left Option, and fatfingering alt+F4 is likely even harder, but it’s nice to allow players to preclude the possibility of that happening if they so choose.
Hi!
Thank you for your report!
Can you confirm that this issue still occurs on the 26.3 Snapshot 6?
