Summoning a block-attached entity with a command logs an error

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Execute

    /summon item_frame
  2. ❌ The error in the attached image (“Block-attached entity at invalid position: null”) is shown.

This bug was introduced somewhere between 1.20.6 and 1.21.11 and affects all block-attached entities, including item frames, paintings and cushions. The error is logged even when the entity is summoned at a valid position. It does not matter whether the command is executed by a player or a command block.

The error message appears for me when I run the command in the chat as well.

It now does for me, too. I probably confused the Minecraft instances I had open.

Updated the description.

The command works for me in both 26.2 and 26.3 Pre-Release 2 with commands enabled, without the same error message. The item frame and painting still spawn from the player or a command block, though they are not attached to a block but float in mid-air about one block above the ground, and then break as items due to not being supported. Cushions and armor stands spawn on the ground as normal, also without the error message.

I used the same command as in the description: /summon item_frame, so it might be incorrect or missing some parts.

I still get the error when executing the command, so I don’t know what happened in your case.

Sorry, disregard my previous comment. I just realised you meant it’s happening in the latest.log file and not an in-game error. It’s also appearing in latest.log for me on 26.2 and 26.3 Pre-Release 2.
