Launcher freezes for a few minutes before launching 13w38a and newer

Can't see any errors in the console- everything is exactly like normal until:
Client> OpenAL initialized.
Client>

Then it hangs for an extremely long time and both the Launcher and Minecraft window appear to be frozen; the close button won't do anything.
However once I get into the actual game everything works fine.
Once I click "Quit Game" on the main menu, both windows freeze.

If I kill the Minecraft process at any time, the launcher window un-freezes.

Selecting any older versions from the Launcher works perfectly (and takes 3 seconds to launch)... I don't even need to restart the launcher.

Minecraft takes several seconds to process the mipmaps.
Switch off Mipmapping (Options -> Video -> Mipmap -> Off), switch to default resource pack and report if that issue is persisting.

Hi, I have the same issue (as I'm sure you know). Turning off the Mipmapping doesn't help, it still takes just as long to get into the game. Also not sure if related but when the Quit Game button is pressed it has another really long waiting time before it closes to the point where it's faster to terminate Java via the terminal.

I just tested it on the same machine (2012 Mac Mini) booting Mac OS X with JRE 7 Update 40, and Minecraft 13w38c launched flawlessly.
I noticed we both have Linux - most likely we need to replace/update/install some dependacy (weird that it works for the older versions though... can we narrow it down from what they changed?)

Okay, if it works on the Mac side of things it's likely not a hardware incompatibility issue (driver issue perhaps?). Unfortunately I don't have Windows to test but my machine is a 5 year old Acer Extensa 5630EZ so it's unlikely to share any components with your Mac. I'm running Elementary OS Luna (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS).

I've just tried the game using both Open-JDK 7 (what I normally use) and Oracle's Java 7 and both have the same issue, using any form of Java 6 results in a crash and a return to the launcher. From watching the System Monitor it shows Java using 98-100% of the CPU during this time but that can't be right because my system doesn't slow down that much. My system is up to date with updates from the Update Manager as well.

I'm going to try it with different Linux distros using VirtualBox running on both OS X and my current Linux setup, maybe that will help narrow it down... Why don't you try this as well?
also, this will probably create more problems than it fixes, but how about running the exe version with Wine! I'll see what happens.

I bought myself a new computer with updated and modern hardware but I still have this issue when running my preferred version of Linux. I'm going to suggest this is likely an issue with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS based distros and I'm going to try to update the Kernel to a more recent version and see if that solves the issue. I'll post the results back here.

My kernel is the latest version available in Ubuntu 12.10, 3.5.0-41-generic i686. Are you using OpenJDK, Sun Java, or something else? Do you think upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 would fix it? I like my LTS releases, but anything for Minecraft 🙂

EDIT: I am upgrading my Ubuntu to 12.10 to see if it works, then to 13.04 if that doesn't work.
EDIT 2: 12.10 is still not working. I'm not getting into the game at all, even after a great delay. Please upvote for fix!
EDIT 3: After a lot of errors, 13.04 works! YES!

Updated to Kernel version 3.8.0-30-generic and it's still hanging after OpenAL initialisation. Something else must have changed between the versions to be causing this...

Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 13w48b? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Minecraft runs perfectly on Linux since 1.7.2!

from Mojang: "Update: Pre-release 1.7.2 has been released to address some serious crashes, including the inability to start on some Linux computers."

it worked, whatever they did! 🙂

Sorry, I completely forgot about this bug report.
