I tried this on all manner of ios and android devices, it doesn't work, found some vids of other ways, also didnt work. So it must be your device. GET A NEW IPOD lol no

Go to a tree. Punch the tree blocks till you get some wood. Go to your inventory and hit craft. Craft all the wood into wooden planks. Make a crafting table. Place it down. Craft sticks once under the first tab and then a wooden pickaxe under the second tab. Then mine 3 stone with the wooden pick and then craft a stone pickaxe. That's how you start.
