If you disconnect from a SMP server but keep minecraft open, then reconnect to the same server, maps you viewed in your first session stop updating player locations. Your old location still is there, but it doesn't update as you move around. If you quit the game completely, and restart it using the launcher, and rejoin the server, the same maps work again.
Similarly, if you reload a world in single player, you have the same problem.
Note that this is not a dup of MC-3416 or MC-31731. (I get those bugs too, if I use framed maps, but this is different. MC-3416 requires a server restart to fix, this issue is fixed by client restart.)

Ryan, do you have any framed maps in your world? If so, you may also be encountering MC-3416, which would explain why you need a server restart as well.

I currently have no framed maps on the server I am testing with, though I did at one point frame a map and since removed it. I created a second test server, where the only thing I did was to create a map (with the give command) and test this bug, and the issue still happens. Also please note that a server restart alone will not fix the issue for me, so that's not the same as MC-3416 either. I have to restart both the client and the server to fix the issue. I can't explain the difference you and I are seeing in the fix, but the description of the issue sounds to be the exact same.

Also happening in single player, see MC-33079

Confirmed in single player; no framed maps.

The player icon on the map item also stops updating on your first map after creating a new map in another location and resizing it.
To reproduce this. 1. I made a map, resized it completely zoomed out. 2. Then created a new map outside of the area covered by the first map. 3. Then after resizing the new map 4 times (completely zoomed out) the player icon on the first map stops updating when you move back into the area that the first map covers. It also stops updating if you save and quit to title. Once you completely exit the game and come back the player icon shows on all the maps again and will move correctly.

The icon is no longer freezing after resizing in pre-release 1.7, but the player icon still freezes when you save and quit to title in single player.

Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 13w48b? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.7.4 / Launcher version 1.3.8 or later? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

Ezekiel, I was the original poster, and this does appear to be fixed in 1.7.4. I tested only the condition I was reported originally... that reconnecting to a server in MP without quitting minecraft lost the pointers, and I was able to see the player pointer after reconnecting.
Thanks!
I've had different experiences with fixing the issue. In my testing, it requires both a server and a client restart to fix. I have tried restarting just the client or just the server, but the map issue persists.
