On SMP I have two copies of a map that doesn't show my position while I hold it, it shows a green arrow in the center instead.
Apparently that green arrow is the position of the frame which holds it, but even if I remove it from the frame, it still doesn't shows my position AND shows the green arrow.
Other maps work fine, so far, but I haven't tried to place them in frames.
I've noticed there is a similar bug reported, but since it is marked as closed, this is either a new bug, or it hasn't really been solved.

Original report is MC-73 (but that's closed). Still happens in 1.7.2.

Never had issues in 1.6.x but first tried the maps in item frames in 1.7.2.
Now I have maps not showing my position.
I can still discover new territory, but the only marker I see is the item frame (as a white dot).
Retrieving all maps from the item frames does not change that.
Maps are also loading very slow after login.
Placing the item fame and the map at the center of the map area results in the correct green marker.
Still a copy of that map in the players hand shows the old item frame position and no player position.
Putting the frame and map back to the old location results in showing the green marker on
the last position, so we have two green markers what indicates a problem.
PS: I could resolve the issue with maps not showing my position. Since the private server I play on changed the Java version from 1.6 to 1.7 it works again.
PPS: Broke again after a while, was maybe just the server restart?
PPPS: Found strong indication that position marker IS drawn, but behind the "map" pixels.
I was north of a map that showed no position and got a marker at the top.
Moving south, you can see this marker gradually disappear...

Should have re-opened MC-73 and resolved all as duplicates of that, otherwise the great many votes and watchers there are ignored.

Walking into a map from the north, the position marker disappears "under" the map.
