Whenever we chat with a differnent colour, the colour goes back to white when the line breaks.

Well, it happened without any mods and it happens when the client breaks the line. for example, one texture pack breaks the line at 50 characters, while the other at 40 or 60. But the colours always disappear at the linebreak. Therefore it can't be caused by a plugin.
This is most likely due to the server improperly sending the data. When you use supported means of color coding, it works fine
Is this still a concern in the latest Minecraft version 14w02c? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
It might be caused by plugins or mods, not original client or server.
