Occasionally, when a Giant spruce tree is generated, the cone of leaf blocks that can stretch down the sides of the tree may end up generating leaf blocks below the actual bottom of the trunk, if there are air blocks for the leaves to occupy.
To reproduce, place a 2x2 pad of dirt some distance above the surrounding terrain, plant spruce saplings and apply bonemeal until they grow. As the generation is random, it may take a few tries before the right shape of tree is selected.
Attached screenshot shows the result. Note that the dirt pad is one layer up from the bottom of the leaves, while the base of the trunk is at the level of the widest layer of leaves.

Looks quite intended.
If there is air besides the trunk base, the lowest branches may "hang" below the base.
