Crashes in nether on entering/seeing particular chunk

I've been wandering about in the nether trying to find a fortress. I now find that when I try to re-enter particular chunk(s), Minecraft freezes and crashes. Changing the view settings sometimes allows me to move further, sometimes makes no difference. But now merely moving into certain areas of the world makes the game freeze and crash. These are old chunks that I'd moved through before and lit up with torches. Can't tell if my exit portal is in the affected chunk(s). I'm worried it may be.

I haven't encountered a crash problem this severe or repeatable for many months. Now it's suddenly started up, mid-game, in a reasonably fresh world that's just a few weeks old. Previous explorations in the same part of the nether had no problems at all, but now if I enter the wrong area, I'll crash the game. Some directions are still safe, but in other directions, one block too close to I-don't-know-what will cause a crash.

I presume it's something corrupt in a nearby chunk, but that shouldn't crash the game.

Logfile attached.

I speculate that this may be related to MC-55467 and MC-44801, although I'd also have to assume the problem is also triggered by lava falls as well as waterfalls.

In fact in your log file there is no crash, it's just lagging.

[14:13:33] [Server thread/ERROR]: Chunk file at 3,6 is in the wrong location; relocating. (Expected 3, 6, got 15, 17)

That seems to be the problem. Please attach r.0.0.mca.

Is this still an issue in 14w30c ?

I have a possibly similar problem. I was exploring the Nether and found a missing chunk (a vertical column with nothing in it). Shortly afterwards the game slowed down to unusability. I quit out, restarted the computer, and restarted Minecraft: it was generally impossible to start that particular world at all, as it would either freeze up or return to the start screen. I updated my video drivers; no improvement. Occasionally I would get into the game but about half the landscape was missing and response time was extremely long.

I enabled the latest snapshot 14w30c. This allowed the game to start but response time is still extremely low.

I attach a screenshot of the missing chunk and a forced-crash crash report.

@@unknown: This is MC-2545. You have several thousand Zombie pigmen around you, caused by the defect chunk and causing lag.

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases. If this has been done, we can reopen the issue.

Keep in mind that the "Resolved"-Status on this ticket just means "Answered", and that we are waiting for further information on whether this issue still exists or not. We will reopen it as soon as the requested information has been delivered.

Ticket resolved as incomplete, because no answer in a reasonable amount of time (1+ year), if it still happens, please update the ticket.
