The bug
When an anvil lands on top of an item, the item will be deleted. This is also the case when the anvil cannot be placed successfully (i.e. if there's already another block in the same spot), but in this case it doesn't happen consistently.
To reproduce
Place a torch (or a sapling, or another transparent block) on the ground
Throw an item inside of that block
Let an anvil fall on top of that block
The anvil drops as an item when reaching the ground
→ ❌ Sometimes the item you threw will be deleted (crushed by the anvil), sometimes it will still be there

Threw an item at the spot where the anvil is going to land, dropped the anvil, item vanished - anvils are crushing dropped items.
well but the problem is it should not crush the items because it should turn into an item (because of the Sapping) before it cushes the items ... btw I cant reproduce the crushing how you describe it ... just droped some torches on the landing spot of the anvil and all torches still there after i droped it there..
This should be fixed alongside MC-120158.
Confirmed. i dropped 10 anvils, i saw each one produce an item, but only received 3 anvils and 3 slightly damaged anvils.
