The bug
Taking damage from status effects (poison/wither), fire or cacti will deal vertical knockback to the player, even though no knockback should be expected.
How to reproduce
Go into Survival mode and apply Poison II to yourself
Attempt to jump up a fence, a block with a bottom half-slab on top or an equivalent height
The poison damage will allow you to jump up the 1.5 block height, even though this jump cannot be performed normally. Also note that sometimes taking damage will momentarily "pin" you to the ground and prevent you from jumping at all.

works as intended and is a pretty cool feature, in Sethbling's 15 seconds speedrun map ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n02enFUrrlw ,at 1:05, one down from the top right), one or the tracks is you are poisoned and blinded while you go through the course, you have to time your jump between the knockbacks in order to reach the end.
Please always be aware that sometimes what people here report as a 'bug' are seem by some to a lot of people as a feature with practical uses, please take into account just what harm your 'bug' is when you consider reporting it.
@Sonicwave Inconsistent yes, fixing it is unnecessary in my opinion, is this just a matter of OCD-like feelings that everything should be neat and perfect?

@Sonicwave What harm does it do to the gameplay, the drowning knockback was taken out because people could never resurface, what does the knockback from being poisoned and being on fire do?
