Chunk loading slower in 1.8.2-pre3 than in 1.8.1

Chunk loading in 1.8.2-pre1, -pre2, -pre3 seems to be much slower than in 1.8.1
The performance is comparable to 1.7.X versions and below.
Steps to reproduce:
1.Create a new world (you can see both default and superflat world types on the screenshots below) using 1.8 or 1.8.1 version.
2.Chunk loading is quite fast, isn't it?
3.Save and quit to title, then quit game.
4.Now launch 1.8.2-pre3 (affects pre2 and pre1 as well) version and enter the world.
5.Compare chunk loading speed in 1.8.1 and in 1.8.2-pre3.

Your fog looks odd; is your game modded?

Yeah, when you limit your fps chunk-loading is slow now :/

Something we should fix now it works better on slower machines.

That's really sad to hear. To give an idea, here are some improvised perf. measurements (loading 21 chunks render distance -same world position, several attempts averaged, VBO on, Vsync off, etc):

  • 1.8: ............. 5 s

  • 1.8.1: .......... 6 s

  • 1.8.2pre4: ..12 s (!!!)

Worse if instead of limiting to 60fps I raise to unlimited frames, instead of going faster i found this:

  • 1.8: ................ 6 s

  • 1.8.1: ............. 7 s

  • 1.8.2pre4: ... 27 s (!!!)

So 1.8.2 seems to be having only 30-40% of the speed of 1.8 loading chunks.

Chunk loading was really amazing in 1.8 and may people praised it. To many of us (mostly single players), good/reliable chunk loading has always been the top feature request, which was fully realized in 1.8, finally surpassing 1.2.5 and even solving other long term rendering issues.

All those would be very disappointed if the loading speed drops so much. It is hard to see this go so shortly after finally having it at its best ever in 1.8, and would discourage upgrading.

1.8.2 may be a number over 1.8.1, but it actually feels going backwards. I am sure you guys put a lot of effort on this, and I thank you for that. Just please do not lose sight of what many people want -something you already delivered before! Several weeks ago a little girl wrote a letter to Satya Nadella asking Mr Nadella to just keep Minecraft as it is. I/we just ask to keep what is good as it is, and if not possible for multiplayer, at least optional or for single player. Keep the greatest game the greatest. It doesn't deserve less.

Thank you.
P.S. let me know if I can help

In my case the world loads equal fast like in 1.8... And I've got a GT 720 and GT 720M.

And in case it helps anyone while this gets fixed one way or another, at least for my system (high end, running in ram drive) the best fps value is limiting to 60. More fps or less fps end up loading chunks slower. I wonder if it has to do with matching the monitor refresh rate -vsync off anyway.

Turn your clouds off (or fast), it greatly increases loading speed.

Thanks for the hint Vladislav, it definitely seems to make a difference.

Furthermore... I have not measured it thoroughly, but 1.8.2pre6 significantly improves the rendering performance, almost back at the speed of 1.8.0!

Thanks Erik and team!!! 🙂
