When fighting the ender dragon, it seems to fly towards the pre spawned bedrock portal structure roughly every 30 seconds. When it does so it seems to remain stuck hovering above this portal for about 7 seconds whether you hurt it or not.
It seems almost like a mechanic to keep the ender dragon centred as, whatever happens, it seems to make a direct bee line to the portal after a certain amount of time whether in Creative or Survival

Probably because you can only kill the dragon above the portal (bug?) and it'd be too hard to get it there otherwise.
Guys, it is a FEATURE, go watch the minecon video. It is so that you guys can fight him off easier so you can reach him.
I had fought it in survival and saw the purple flame attack. However as this locked positioning of the Ender Dragon seemed to make the fight much easier rather than increasing the difficulty I viewed it as a bug in the new feature.
I now understand that it is a feature which was originally from the console version of the game.
This is not a bug, it is a feature.
