If you place a chorus plant on the side of the chorus plant blocks they have a chance to randomly break the entire plant for no reason.

If it's intended, it's not working consistently. Sometimes the chorus plant breaks when blocks are placed next to it, sometimes it doesn't. We don't know if blocks next to the plant are supposed to break it or not, but either way, it should either always break the plant, or never.
The chorus tree seems to break whenever a chorus plant block is placed adjacent to a chorus plant block with the block state [up:true], or whenever a different block is placed below a chorus plant block with [up:true] or above a chorus plant block with [down:true] along with at least one of north, east, south or west set to true.
Chorus plants can't grow like that. They break like cactus if something is placed next to them, except by the top block.
