The new lighting which was introduced in beta 1.8 is even today "broken"
and kind of "cuts" off and smooth lighting even appears in completely dark
aeras. Areas with the light level 0 had no smooth lighting in the old lighting
engine, which now could be a solution to the problem we are having since
the new lighting engine was added. I've included pictures of the current
lighting and a few pictures from version beta 1.7.3 demonstrating that
there was no smooth lighting at light level 0 and no transitioning problems.

Added better examples. An important notice is that the light cuts
exactly at a chunk limit. We can also notice that the light cuts on the wall(The dark side of the wall is at Y=15 and the bright side is at Y=16).
Reproduced at night time, by adding/removing a torch near a chunk limit, in a dark area.
Also, most of the time the light updates instantly, but it do take some time in other tests. It doesn't uptade at the same speed if we place it on a wall or on the ground.

More testing should be useful.
