I am having the same thing happening with me I have to use the in smooth lighting option.
This has also effected me in the latest update. But instead it freezes when I try to save game. And when I go back in my world my progress has been lost

My 1.11 server was using something ridiculous like 1/4 of my CPU even with no players, but when I added -XX:+DisableExplicitGC it only used 0-1%. Also what is a GC?
