The bug
Ghasts will at random times despawn whilst fighting the Player. When the ghast despawns, any fireballs that belong to the ghast will disappear along with it.

Actually, this still happens in the current state of Minecraft (1.12.2).
I just had it happen to me right in front of my eyes.
So, I thought Iād give my two cents on what I think is happening.
My hypothesis is that the ghast is large enough to render and move around, but it is far enough for it to If this is the case, an easy solution would be to either exclusively extend the despawn radius for the ghast, or base the despawn radius on the size of the entity to be despawned.
Hello, recently, I made a data pack in 1.14.3 that adds a sword that can launch fireballs (more precisely make them appear in the direction where the player looks, besides I can not make them appear for her to leave all alone in the direction where the player is looking, finally), when it appears, it starts to disappear and reappear, it's very annoying. It happens to me the same problem with the ghast who is not far from me and who throws me a fireball then disappears with her ...
This is still happening in 1.16.1 but I'd don't understand why cuz mobs farther away from me than the ghast don't despawn. I'll even agro the ghast and it might launch one fireball before despawning, granted not every time but it feels like it's worse than the beta.
Is this still an issue in the most recent versions (currently that is 1.10.2, or 16w42a) of Minecraft? If so, please update the affected versions and help us keeping this ticket updated from time to time.
