Can't eat food on server

Occasionally, whenever I try to eat, the eating animation just keeps displaying and it doesn't actually fill up my hunger.
What I expected to happen was...:
I could fill up my hunger bar.
What actually happened was...:
The eating animation just kept playing as I held right click.
