because you stop running when hitting a mob, start sprinting again, and it'll increase normally

You are still running after hitting a mob. You can tell that by observing your moving speed. It's faster than walking. How is that not counted as sprinting distance? Doesn't make sense imo.

no, you actually stop sprinting (at least I am)

press sprint
press forward
release sprint
hit mob
you walk

You remind me an important detail I forgot to mention. I was holding the sprint key. If you hold it while running, you still have the same speed after hitting. I always thought that is intended, is it not?

you stop sprinting for a brief moment (noticeable by your screen zooming in and out)

Hmm... even if that's the case, I don't have to do extra inputs to keep myself running. Shouldn't the score continue to increase after the brief period?

ok, now I noticed, reopened, and confirmed

Turns out I misunderstood the report previously. Confirmed in 1.9.3-pre2.
