Unable to update native launcher

Error: Unable to update native launcher

Issue:

Game had been working the day before, however failed to update launcher 11th October 2019. Attempts to reinstall the game by deleting all minecraft related files and downloading minecraft again from minecraft.net failed. Attempts to use old saves of the game located on seperate hard drives as vectors failed. Issue seemed to line up with the release of OS Catalina.

The below error message:

[Info: 2019-10-12 05:56:23.935423: LauncherConfiguration.cpp(213)] Error opening: /Volumes/Local Data/Users/106260/Library/Application Support/minecraft/launcher/.version, Error message: No such file or directory

Could not find .version file in launcher.bundle -> resources either

I have the exact same issue on Mac OS 10.14.6

I have the exact same issue on macOS 10.11.6, tried deleting and reinstalling both MC and Java with 0 luck.

Is this still an issue? There have been multiple launcher updates since this ticket was created.

Issue still seems to be present, although rarely

I have been currently been getting this issue a lot and had a trick to fix it, but now the trick isn't working. Is there a permanent fix to this? I can't uninstall and reinstall due to this issue. Very frustrating as I play with my kids, and now I can't.

Could someone experiencing this issue upload the file at ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/nativeUpdaterLog.txt and attach it to the issue?

Upgrade to macOS Catalina or Big Sur (when it's released). Updating the launcher works fine on 10.15.6.

closing as "done", Re-open if this issue occurs more,

The launcher should correctly handle the situation where the .version file is missing.
