Launcher requiring Java 6 on OS X 10.10 Yosemite

The new OSX launcher for Minecraft is finaly done, you can download it here 🙂 https://minecraft.net/download

When I open the launcher, pop-up says "To open “Minecraft” you need to install the legacy Java SE 6 runtime." Java 8u20 Build b17 is the only version of java that works on Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite as of this post.

Any progress being made on this? I can't resort to an older version of my computer.

Install Java for OS X 2014 from the Apple Support website, it will solve the Problem.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572

I just downloaded and installed Java for OS X 2014-001 (http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1572/en_US/JavaForOSX2014-001.dmg).
(Double-Click downloaded file /Users/YOURLOGINID/Downloads/JavaForOSX2014-001.dmg; then in resulting Finder window double-click the icon JavaForOSX.pkg; click continue and accept and agree as needed to complete the installation).

Java for OS X 2014-001 includes installation improvements, and supersedes all previous versions of Java for OS X. This package installs the same version of Java 6 included in Java for OS X 2013-005.
Please quit any Java applications before installing this update.

Now I am able to run the Minecraft Launcher app.

Only other option (I have not tried this yet) is to download the BETA version of JDK™ 8u20 Early Access Releases:
https://jdk8.java.net/download.html
JDK™ 8u20 Early Access Releases
License Agreement:
You must accept the Early Adopter Development License Agreement for Java SE to download this software.

This is just a duplicate of MCL-1049. There are very simple workarounds listed in that ticket that you can use in the meantime before Mojang releases a fix.

I had the same problem (OSX 10.10 Yosemite Beta public 2)
I have a good method and it's work for me :

  • For the next step, install the first download : Java for OS X 2014-001
Now the program should start the installation normally

  • MIRACLE Minecraft launcher works now!

It'll be "a few days" when I see it. I'm more likely to think by the time OS X 10.15 is out they'll have it fixed. I follow this as a legacy as I stopped and lost interest in Minecraft by this point.

Waiting for oracle to fix a bug. As far as I know you still can install legacy java on 10.10, even if the version is not listed as supported. Alternatively the .jar launcher may work with java 8 installed.

Seems this was updated since: https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/640890174432481280

Please no one install Java 6 ... It is obsolete and has major security problems.
