OSX: Unable to update minecraft native launcher (Caused by bug in Avast Antivirus Software)

Caused by bug in Avast Antivirus Software

In Avast, you'll need to disable both the File and Web Shields found under Preferences > Shields. Once both shields are disabled, you should be able to get the newest version of the launcher.

This is a technical support issue; this site is for bug reports only. For technical support please use the Mojang Support Center.

I just went to a chat support for Mojang and was referred here since they said it is probably a bug.

Opened Minecraft earlier today, no problems until I decide to get the update for the new included Java - esque features. The download runtime menu opens up quickly enough, and runs. 59.92 mb download and I have plenty of space since I try to keep my Mac updated as much as possible and I scan it regularly. It only reaches to 59.90 or a little less than the full download before it crashes and restarts multiple times before reporting "unable to update minecraft native launcher" and quitting altogether. Might be because I'm running it on Mac but haven't had any problems before.

Diagnostic Log for the crash at this link: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12360399/

Brought up another log in Terminal that I copied and pasted the text to at this link: http://paste.ubuntu.com/12360637/

They said it sounds like a bug, but I'm not a computer expert. Is there any way to fix this?

I don't want to open another bug in here, but I just had the same issue after trying to update the launcher to the newest launcher. Same exact issue occurs with the 59.90MB, then the updater stalls. I checked the nativeUpdateLog.txt, which is similar to the other bugs I'm seeing here:

Now I can't even run Minecraft. I tried, uninstalling minecraft, turning off the firewall/antivirus, restarting my mac, and updating java to the newest, and I still get the error. I can't tell if it's the log is saying that the native launcher needs to update to use the newest java or vice versa.

Also having this issue, where the update stalls at 59.90 MB.

This may be a pretty recent bug, but it's a definite problem if people that want to run Minecraft can't even get the launcher to load.

Seems like common consensus is to stick with the .jar launcher until this bug is resolved.

I can't see the .jar files. After I move the minecraft install file to the Applications folder it seems to install minecraft but then tries to run the downloader for the native launcher and then times out at the 50 MB. Would it be better to just install older java and then install the minecraft files?

Found the source of the problem!

In Avast, you'll need to disable both the File and Web Shields found under Preferences > Shields. Once both shields are disabled, you should be able to get the newest version of the launcher.

I have turned off both web fields and still haven't been able to update the Minecraft native launcher.

Never mind, it worked after all 😃
