During the 0.5 seconds in which a squid is invulnerable after sustaining damage, the squid will still produce ink particles when attacked by an entity. This can lead to enormous quantities of particles when rapidly tapping a squid, causing a significant drop in FPS.
I expected that the squid would produce ink only after it has been successfully "harmed" (though certain entities may deal no true damage) through another entities' actions against it. However, even if not successful, all entity attacks that can be directed towards squid will produce ink particles.

Sammy, please reread the description. I was not describing the ink particles themselves, only that they can be produced when the squid is invincible, leading to "particle spamming".
The FPS only drops to about half when you're 1 to 2 blocks away from the squid when it produces ink. It has been that way since 0.11.1. And yes, even without the squid, there are still too many entities set for the game to function properly. Will research!
Was just randomly browsing through the bugtracker, and I was curious if Bug 10000 was a valid report... and it is! Confirmed to affect 1.0.3.
