Update on this issue:
Many users have found that the issue they have is that Minecraft does not have the correct app permissions enabled on their device. The following steps might resolve the issue for you:
Open the main Settings on your iOS device
Scroll down and select the Minecraft app
Ensure the "Local Network" toggle is ON
Useful comments with the workaround can be found here and here.
My kids and I used to be able to connect to each other's worlds at home on wifi. They then signed up for Microsoft accounts so They could connect to friends who were not in our house. Everything continued to work fine. Then a couple weeks ago, they could no longer connect to any local network devices, but still could connect to friends in other locations. Our devices are all updated. We have no idea what the issue is. Nothing has changed in our settings or services. We all connect using the same wifi network, same app versions, etc. We don't use any mods, and are not using beta versions of the game or any kind of extra security or firewalls.

I’m sorry I can’t say for sure, as our devices update in the background at night.

We are having the same issue two ipads (iOS 14.2) will not connect to each other over LAN. the world is seen in the friends list but the connection fails when trying to join. We can connect to server worlds. Running minecraft v1.16.50

We think this issue could be related to a new iOS 14 privacy setting for Local Network access. If you go to your settings app and select "Minecraft" from the list of apps, you should see a screen like this:

Make sure that the toggle for "Local Network" is on.
Please let us know if this resolves the issue.
