The maximum render distance could be set manually in the options.txt file by adjusting the gfx_viewdistance parameter.
Version 1.16.201 overwrites or resets the options.txt file when the client starts.
So the maximum render distance is now set by the client.
It is not possible to go beyond the calculated value set by the client.
How can Windows Bedrock users override the maximum render distance?

This method of changing the drawing distance is not intended for minecraft. Please change the draw range through the settings!
Still seems like a bug, I don't see why Mojang would randomly decide to limit file editing in a game known for being incredibly easy to customize.

It works fine if you set a value in options.txt that is available from the game settings (multiply by 16 to convert chunks to blocks). However, you are essentially asking for the maximum render distance to be settable to a higher value than what is available from the game settings.

I request for this issue to be reopened, or at least no longer flagged as invalid. It seems Umija5895M misinterpreted the issue, as this is not a feature request at all.
Changing gfx_viewdistance in options.txt used to allow extending the render distance beyond the in-game limit set by available RAM, but as of v1.17.0 no longer allows higher values than the in-game limit. Changing the value further has no effect in-game, but it did before 1.16.210.59 Beta.
If this is an intended change, it should be flagged as "Works as Intended" rather than invalid.
Confirmed that it affects 1.16.201.
Steps to reproduce
1. Go to the options.txt folder and change the gfx_viewdistance option to higher than your maximum render distance for your device.
2. Launch Minecraft again.
3. See that the render distance has not been changed to the custom render distance and it is back to your maximum render distance for your device.
4. When you open the options.txt file again, the gfx_viewdistance option is overwritten by the game and changed back to your maximum render distance.
