This bug report is a parity issue with Java.
Summary:
In the Java version, the dangling roots have a hitbox that is always centered. And also in the Java version the hitbox is much smaller.
7 pixels high and 8 pixels on the sides (4 pixels off the edge).
Steps to reproduce:
Place hanging roots.
Take a look at the dimensions of the hitbox.
Observed results:
The hitbox is not always in the center, and also has dimensions that do not correspond to the Java version.
Expected results:
The hitbox of the blocks must be the same.

I think rotation of the hitbox is intentional per MC-220664
