You can also plant the azalea bush, and grow that under water into an azalea tree. Not sure if its a bug, but it does seem related to this post 👍

i also found a underwater azelea tree in seed -993456249 at cords -3 42 28 .

Bella Davis

It also happens in the newest Beta 1.17.30.23.
I uploaded a screenshot. The seed is -1067181226 and the coordinates are -170 58 -167

I checked yesterday during an extreme weather watch on a new seed... I found a ton of underwater azalea trees, of which I saved the coordinates of seven. Version is 1.17.30.23 beta, seed is -719008629, and I found azalea trees at these coordinates: -217, -18 (two of them in close proximity); -722, -972 (in a frozen ocean biome); -830, -832; -670, -826; and the most impressive generation of all at -777, -1024 (there were three here). There were definitely more, but these were the first instances, as well as the most impressive ones, I could find in this one seed.

Still present in 1.17.30.24.

I found an entire forest of the things while diving to cut seaweed for fuel(see attached screenshot).

In my opinion, this should be considered a bug.  Trees should not be found submerged on the sea floor.  It looks ridiculous.

World seed:1024 (generated on 1.17.30.24)

Relates to MC-218592.

Thank you, Avoma.  Looks like both versions have the same problem, but it's less severe on Java.

Okay, the generation of azalea trees now is ridiculous. I found an azalea tree that naturally spawned in a lush cave. Like, I can see the lush cave, I’m on it, why do you have to put a tree in it?

This bug issue can be prevented by removing the water blocks such as water and flowing_water from may_replace components in the azalea tree feature JSON files.
