When You Get Either Red or Normal Smooth Sandstone & Chiseled Sandstone .. It will acts like a normal sandstone in the crafting menu either 2x2 hand crafting or 3x3 Crafting Table ..

For Example You Crafted all Your Sandstone into Red or Normal Chiseled or Smooth sandstone, the materials that red or normal sandstone is still available, Even if you only have either Red or Normal Smooth Sandstone & Chiseled sandstone, WEIRD ....

Confirmed for 0.15.0 on Windows 10. I wouldn't mind this staying as a feature, though. It would give more flexibility when trying to use up leftover materials, as you could turn excess smooth sandstone and chiseled sandstone into slabs and stairs.

Please respond and add the current version if you can reproduce this issue.
