MCPE-171807

Individual layers of chunks are disappearing.

I can't say much about it, except that this has happened on my realm for the second time. Additionally, I had trouble joining my realm before I noticed this.

(I was now able to reproduce it on a normal local world as well, by using structure blocks to create a massive flat area)

Here are the steps I followed that led to the bug reappearing:

  1. I terraformed a large area.

  2. I made it completely flat.

  3. Then I went traveling and explored the world for about 3 hours.

  4. When I returned, I found this bug.

So far, it seems to only occur with chunks that are entirely flat on the surface. I have never experienced anything like chests or beacons being deleted along with it—I assume this cannot happen. However, this is just a guess.

Informations:

  1. I was able to reproduce this bug on a local copy of the realm world. (With Commands)

  2. I play with a Ps5 and Windows (11) on the Realm.

  3. I was only able to observe how the layer at height 64 was deleted.

The bug often occurs for me as follows:
Flatten a large area. Make the area so that, when standing on it, you are at height 65. Leave the World. Rejoin the World. You will find deleted layers in some places. Alternatively, you can leave the chunks, go on a short journey, and then return. The same result will occur.

Observed:
A layer of a seemingly random chunk was deleted.

Expected:
The layer didn't disappear; it remains as I left it after terraforming.

Can confirm the bug. I'm surprised that this hasn't been fixed.

I found the problem in year 2022 and a self-placed top layer made of stone slabs disappeared. The missing area was exactly 16*16 and the total area of stone slabs was several chunks. It's worth noticing that Y=64 is not a neccessary condition of missing the top layer. The world I was in is in vanilla single player survival mode.

@SaveTheBedrock, does this bug only happen to stone variants?

@SmartAngel

No, it also happened to me several times with grass blocks.
I’m surprised that you could encounter this bug at other heights. For me, it always occurs exactly at Y64—never above, never below.

@SaveTheBedrock, I've checked their coordinates and the stone slabs are situated at Y=33, which means they are above the second layer Y=32.

Maybe it has something to do with the integer power of 2. I highly recommend you to see whether the top layer disappears exactly above Y=16, 32, 128, 256, etc.

Hey!

Here is a world in which I recreated this bug by creating a large flat area, with the top layer at height 64.

The flat area is at -541 64 -149
