Vibrant visuals: cave water and deep water at night are completely black to the player underwater

In the non-vibrant-visuals rendering, when the player is underwater the camera illuminates somewhat like a night vision effect. Although this “water vision” is arguably too strong (MCPE-57701), it allows players to see so that they can navigate and know that they are in water. However, in vibrant visuals this “water vision” is not present at all. As a result, in areas where there is no block light or sunlight the water fog darkens to near total blackness. It is difficult to see anything and feels more like floating in outer space than being in water.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Stand inside water that is underground.

Expected result

The water has a blue fog similar to the way cave water appears when not in the cave.

Observed result

There is no blue coloring. It is pitch black and difficult to tell that you are in water.

When the player is underwater and enters a submerged cave, the fog from the water disappears in the cave and there is no fog at all as if there was no water.

in one image I am outside the underwater cave looking at it (dark blue coloring)

In another image I enter the cave and I look outside the cave (cyan coloring on the outside and black player environment)

and in the other image I am inside the cave but there is no fog, just the shiny particles of water floating. It is as if there is no water inside the submerged cave. (dark image with glowing particles floating)

The official version has been released and the bug stills in the game.

Held items get shaded blue in first person camera when under water underground. Perhaps the underwater fog is being applied to the wrong object by the render engine when the player is underground? (see MCPE-220508)

Edit: held items are always shaded blue underwater. It’s just harder to see when the player is exposed to the sky..

This issue may be identical to the Known Issue mentioned in 1.21.80.25 Preview (when vibrant visuals was introduced):

  • Surfaces deeper than eight blocks underwater are dark

However, I am not sure if that referred to this issue, or to sunlight illumination and caustics, which is (now) independent of block light.
